I was 9 when war broke out and lived in Lutterworth. I had 3 brothers, one in each of the armed services. I remember my mum sitting, crying for them.
Lutterworth
I remember that there were many troops going through the town. They used to stay for a night or two in the building where Ford’s is now. There was a barracks where Hill Drive is now.
You were asked whether you would take in officers and soldiers. We had one young man stay with us and I remember that he stole my brother’s camera.
Once a plane went over Lutterworth firing. The all clear had gone and people were beginning to emerge from the shelters when a stray fighter swooped low over the town and used up its last bullets. Everyone was really offended – how dare he come over Lutterworth?! There were bullet holes in the buildings.
We could hear Coventry being bombed. It was a really loud noise and you could see it in the sky. Sometimes ceilings would fall down in Lutterworth due to the noise.
School
I went to Walcote School. We were aware of the war but there was nothing to frighten us in the village. We had normal lessons such as arithmetic, geography, history and English. We also had to do country dancing and needlework. I remember that we spent time making samplers and knitting.
Entertainment
We used to spend time embroidering. There was also the cinema in Lutterworth, dancing every week in the town hall and many people went to the pubs in the evening.
Toys and Games
We played with Whip n’ Tops. I remember a hunting game called Fox n’ Hounds.
Food
I remember omelettes made with dried egg. They were quite leathery but I liked them.
Fashion
I remember having to save coupons for my brother’s wedding – this was so we could have bridesmaid’s dresses.
VE Day
It was late at night when we heard about the victory. I think it was about 10-ish so I was in bed. The street parties must have been later in the week.
