During the war great swathes of land around the village of Bures (near Sudbury) were taken over taken over by the US AAF. This was the centre that supplied Essex and South Suffolk with ammunition for the airfields. Trains arrived from docks such as Grimsby and Tyneside delivering high explosive bombs for storage at the village. The whole area was transformed by the arrival of the Americans who cordoned off a large proportion of the village and proceeded to lay roads across the fields. Despite the fact that there were thousands of bombs next to the roadside no incident was ever recorded of accidents.

When the trains arrived the material was packed in wooden boxes. Children used to turn up with prams and take the wood back home for the fire, under the noses of the guardposts.

I would very grateful if anybody has a picture of an ammunition train which I could add to my collection.
