Harry Brown - P. O. W
My Grandad was a Prisoner of War during the second world war from 28.4.41 to 25.5.45.
He was captured during the Battle of Kalamata which took place on the 28.4.41. Kalamata is in the southern Peloponnese. Around 10,000 were captured and taken to Stalag XVIII A in Wolfsburg in Austria.
During this time he became friends with Maurice Jones. He started writting to Maurice鈥檚 sister Hilda. After he was released from Stalag XVIII A and returned to Britain to lead a normal life he then married Hilda, ( My Nan ).
He managed to escape once but did get caught, upon his return to camp a young Nazi Soldier then shot my Grandad鈥檚 knee caps out. My Grandad suffered badly with his knees all his life.
Harry experienced horrendous things during his time at Stalag XVIII A and kept these to himself.
Harry grew up in Amesbury in Wiltshire, next to Stonehenge. He enlisted for the Army at Salisbury during August 1940. He was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers and began his service in the Middle East and Greece before being captured.
He was discharged just before christmas in 1945.
