Staffordshire County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.

I was about ten years old when the war was on (1940). We didn't have Anderson shelters where we lived. Instead we had two large brick buildings on waste land for the whole community to use. My mum was frightened to go into these buildings because it was pitch black inside them and there were no seats either. So instead of going into these buildings, our family used to hide under the kitchen table!! We as children, although we were scared, all found it a bit of fun - something different!
Luckily, there were no direct hits in our area so we all stayed safe - thankfully.
