My Grandmother was the black market Queen in Elsmere Port to one of the big stores where she was a friend with the manager; she would go to Liverpool with my cousin carrying suitcases. She would do a deal with the manager and walk away with suitcases full of clothes and food. She was very friendly with the policemen at Lime street station and he would carry her suitcases to the train every Saturday and she would give him half a crown for it. He never knew he was carrying black market goods.
My Grandmothers Kitchen would be like an Aladdin’s cave during the war, with hams hanging everywhere. Even the local police in Elsmere Port would go to my Grandmother for their black market food and clothes.
She went with my uncle to Chester one day, to see a car, a damlar in the window of the car showroom. She asked the salesman how much the car was he repield 650 pounds. She upended her bag on the bonnet of the car and said count 600 pounds out of that I’ll give you 600 in cash.
