I lived with my parents and brother in Stoke Newington, London, and attended N.Hackney Central School. When I was evacuated I went to school in Hertfordshire and had to start learning Pitman shorthand. I stayed with Mr & Mrs Stoten in a village called Buckland. We only met once since the war ended. I learned to ride on a Cart Horse, but I hated every minute of country life! As I was evacuated I remember waiting for the Evacuee train at Clapton station, clutching a gas mask and my young brothers hand.
During the war, my parents home was damaged by a fire bomb.
I can remember my mother coming to visit and getting a lift from the station on the back of a flour lorry.
When I was staying with Mr & Mrs Stoten I thought they were "very old". When I visited them once some years ago I found out they were only 23 years of age, but at 13 that was considered "very old". Eventually I returned to live with my parents in Reading where they went when they were bombed out. I was very glad to get back to a town!
