This story was submitted to the People's War site by Ian Hayes of the 大象传媒 GMR Action Desk on behalf of Ronald Thomas and has been added with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Gorton was an industrial part of Manchester, and industrial workers mostly lived there. It was a target for German bombers. When the sirens went, we opened the pantry door and the whole family sheltered under the stairs. It was very cramped. We could hear the bombs screaming down, and waited to hear the thud, or bang. We could not tell how far away the bombs were. Many did not explode. We lived near Belle Vue zoo, and were concerned that the animals could escape and cause problems, as there were snakes and ferocious animals.
