Father had gone off to fight in the war,
Mother had gone on the factory floor,
The children all slept in the shelter all grey,
And even lived down there for most of the day.
The bombs whistled down with a bang and a crump,
The guns thundered back with a scream and a thump,
The houses fell down and the people blew up,
Mother got old and was always a grump.
The Yanks came around with stokcings and gum,
Some Mums seemed lucky and had all the fun,
We waited for Dad to come back again,
But just like the others, we waited in vain.
School hours were lost we were awke all night long,
Weeks went on by, we were still going strong,
Bombs turned to rockets, then flying bombs too,
Some more men were missing. Dad. Where are you?
Churchill kept talking, we waited for news,
We had coupons for everything, food, clothes and shoes,
Keep gas mask on you in little box brown,
Don't go without it, the gas might come down.
We were sent miles away. Up North. To be free,
Away from the bombing, an evacuee,
We still wanted news, who was back, what was new,
Was our house still standing? Dad. Where are You?
Faces were grave, war was taking so long,
Then down dropped an A-Bomb. Hiroshima gone.
Millions were killed by one single deed,
With aftermath dreadful (because of man's greed)
We had parties galore to celebrate peace,
The flags waving high all over the streets,
We danced. And we ate. And we drank beer and tea.
What a wonderful feeling it was, to be free.
But some weren't so happy. The women alone,
Or the people bereaved, or those with no home,
I sang. And I danced. And I waved flags like You.......
But inside I cried. Oh Dad, where are You?
