When I was stationed in Devon we were machine gunned regularly as we changed watch. There were two ordinary lorries and two trailors at this post. It was written in stone that there was a three day shift system - so the Germans knew when to attack. I was working on a GCI unit (Ground Control Interception). It was an early unit and pioneered to be able to guide the pilots onto the German planes and it was so successful that it was a big target for the Germans. They used to fly along, skimming the very tops of the waves and gain height quickly just as they reached the jut of land on which we were situated. They seemed just to appear, suddenly, firing at us with machine guns.
