At the age of four I had to have my tonsils out. I was certain that I would go into a ward full of wounded soldiers where I would be treated like a hero. At the crack of dawn, I was out of bed, dressed, and with my case packed. Later that morning my mother took me to the hospital. The door to the ward opened. Inside were four cots, three of them occupied, and the place smelt of wee. I was so upset, I ran a high temperature, and my operation had to be delayed by two days. A boy in one of the other cots had a wonderful toy aeroplane. On the third day my parents came to the hospital with a parcel. It contained an identical aeroplane. I think it helped my recovery.
