Donald Delves

We were in the small town of Bolzano in northern Italy. It was 6 a.m. when I walked across a car park to go and collect 2 books I had been reading, but had left in the front of our vehicle the previous night.
As I got close to the car park entrance, I noticed 2 girls asleep on the pavement. They only had one blanket each to lie on and shared an old blanket to cover them.
I thought it best to to ask why they were lying on the pavement, which must have been very uncomfortable for a female person.
They told me they were trying to get to a Monastry at Cassino. The girls then told me they had just come over the border into Italy after being released from a Concentration Camp, and to prove this they both pulled up their sleeves to show me the numbers tatooed on their arms. This was proof that they had both been in the horrible concentration camps that were responsible for so many deaths.
I asked them if they were hungry, which they agreed they were. So I told them to wait there until the small Cafe opened, when I would get them some warm food with coffee or tea. Eventually, the little Cafe opened and I took them in for breakfast, for which they thanked us. The Cafe owner would not take any money for the food or warm coffee.
The girls said they still wanted to go to the Monastry at Cassino, even though I told them it had been destroyed.
I never saw these poor girls again.
