My mum 'Ethel' joined the land army when she was 17, she became the forewoman, and had to drive the truck. The stories she told us made her life seem like such a fun time even though there was a war going on. My favourite of all her stories was when Glen miller was coming to play at the Corn Exchange in Bedford, only uniformed personnel were invited. All the local girls went out and bought themselves a uniform to gain admission. Mum and her gang were late that night as they had been working late when they arrived the hall was full. The mayor of Bedford was at the door and saw Mum and her gang, recognising them as frequent (and real) uniformed personnel he insisted that they were to be allowed in. Soon Mum and her gang found where they were to sit, chairs had been place on the stage and they enjoyed the evening in amongst the band. What a wartime experience.
