I was nine when the War began. There were six in our family - my mum and dad and me and my three brothers. My Dad had served in the First World War but he was too old for World War Two.
We lived in Birkdale in Southport and the War didn't really affect us a great deal though there was rationing of course and we were short of everything.
I was more at my Grandma's than I was at home. She loved children and she had an evacuee who lived with her for years. She was a bit younger than me. She grew up with my Grandma and lived with her till she got married. She still visited her after the War.
My uncles were in the War. One of them was at Dunkerque - He was lucky to get away. He told us it was terrible. My Uncle Harry was in a tank regiment and he was killed in Burma. My grandmother told me that my aunt had a premonition of his death before she actually got the news. Another uncle, my Uncle Syd , was a cook.
On VE day there was a party in the street. Mr Ashcroft, who had a woodyard, threw the party. Everyone joined in - even the kids and they managed to get hold of all sorts of food.
