name is Margaret Rowett and I was only thirteen when war broke out it didn鈥檛 really make much difference to me as we lived in oxford and the war never seemed to quite reach us there. We had air raid warnings and we would go under the table in a type of metal cage, I don鈥檛 remember the name of this type of air raid shelter, but more often than not we would go under the stairs. If there was an air raid warning during school time we would all stay there remember we had to take our gas mask鈥檚 every where. Some times bit and pieces would fall of the planes as they passed over head, we would keep these as souvenirs .we children found this all very exciting, and would listen to the wireless to hear the tally of the German planes shot down. We all had ration books and took them every where, if you registered someone as a vegetarian you got extra cheese ration instead of meat.
When an old aunt died we made great use of her clothes altering them to fit.
Some people even wore wooden shoes that had hinges on the soles. People who were connected to the University were offered places in America. Those that went often came back changed and dissatisfied. One of the Don鈥檚 wives had lots of evening dresses sent to her from an American professors wife and we girls were allowed to choose
his time I was about 17.
