I served as an apprentice caulker at the Ship repairing company Brigham & Cowan during the war.
At one time we had a captured French Destroyer called the Leopard in for conversion.

It was the biggest Destroyer in the world, we removed the number 2 stokehold and replaced the space created with fuel tanks to give it a greater range.

Someone in the free French crew did not want to go to sea. they were stealing workmen鈥檚 tools and committing acts of sabotage. In spite of the set backs the ships alterations were finished.

One day a staff car arrived at the ships Birth and out of it emerged General De Gaulle to inspect the assembled crew and ship.

Later on the cinema news reels reported that the Crew had mutinied whilst operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
