In order to economise in coal for gas production, the Bournemouth Gas Co. altered the Calorific Value of the gas produced. This resulted in altering the performance of every single appliance in the whole of the area ie. From Lymington to the other side of Poole and to Wimbourne. Cookers, fires, geysers, fridges etc. etc. had to be altered and it was a case of all hands to the job. In between Cookery demonstrations we demonstrators were given our boxes of tools, and instructions from gas fitters, and when competent, visited house by house, on our bicycles, re-adjusting the cookers and fires. The more complicated appliances were left to the gas fitters. This effort lasted for about 2 months and after this I used to help with meter reading at busy times.
