President of Women's British Legion.
Today has been a wonderful day - at lunch I sat with Mr and Mrs Wickham and found that we were all neighbours in the 40's. We lived in the first of the Pre-Fabs as my husband was blasted in Germany. 100% were disabled. We came down from Scotland in 1945 as we had to have a home for my husband to go to, and there was no accommodation in Scotland.
My husband was from Mayfield and was in the Royal Sussex in the light ack-ack. He had a re-habilitation course in Joinery, and the firm of builders had to take on disabled workers. He was ridiculed because he did not have a full apprenticeship.
He had his leg blown to bits and his arm severly damaged. He died in 1983 of his wounds.
War widows are not allowed to 'remarry' as they lose their war pension.
I was in the British Legion in the 50's and I am a Poppy seller.
I live in Hempsted Fields, and I have lots of friends but I still feel lonely.
