Message 1 - Monty and Canaries

Posted on: 19 December 2005 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

here we go again - Monty didn't have much time for canaries in North Africa as he was busy hitting Rommel
for six out of Africa - near the end of the Sicilain campaign - July/Aug '43
frustrated by the lack of planning for the Invasion of Italy he finally
started his menagerie - this was at Taormino on the NE coast of Sicily
in a letter to Mrs Reynold's on 3rd August '43 he wrote " I have now begun to collect birds of which I have always been very fond.I now have some canaries , bought in Lentini...."
The menagerie consisted of a peacock, about twelve chickens and two turkeys,,, which would take food out of Monty's hand !
