I am going to tell you about Corporal Colin Mollard who served in WW2. He was my grandmother's uncle. She cannot remember her uncle but when she was young her mother told her all about her uncle.
He was born in 1922 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. He joined the Irish Guards in 1939 and one of the first jobs was to guard Buckingham Palace. After that he trained as an explosives expert. In 1944 he volunteered to remove explosives which had been placed by the German army under bridges in Holland to slow down the Allied troops advancing into Arnhem. The operation to capture these bridges was called "Market Garden" and involved thousands of British and American troops.
Unfortunately this plan failed and it was several months before the bridges were finally captured. Many brave men died, including my uncle. He was killed in 1944 at the age of 22 when the tank he was in was blown up by a land mine. A famous movie called "A Bridge too Far" was made about this battle.
He had a wife and a young daughter. After his death he was awarded the Military Medal which was sent to his wife. He has a marked grave in Arnhem.
