My mother and I had just been shopping in Stoneleigh Broadway one afternoon and we were just turning into Waverley Road where we lived, when out of the sky came a German fighter plane and he machine gunned the whole of the Broadway - my mother pushed me into a privet hedge - miraculously nobody was injured, I did have a few cuts and scratches due to being pushed into the hedge, nearly 60 years later, my wife and I were entertaining a few friends also a couple who had just moved into the flat opposite us. During the conversation it appeared that they also lived in Stoneleigh Surrey, actually Stanley spent most of the war overseas in the army, but his wife was there during most of the time, suddenly Stanley's wife asked me , did I remember the the German plane the machine gunned Stoneleigh Broadway. My wife then realised that I was not shooting a line, when I related the story before.
