My story is set in 1943/44 when I was seven or eight years old in small former fishing town of Buckhaven on the north shore of the Firth of Forth on the East coast of Scotland.
I was in class at the local primary one morning and was sat beneath a sea facing window at my desk when the window above me blew in following an explosion on the sea shore.Fortunately there were no serious casualties in the classroom . However we were told later that day that a sea mine had been washed ashore and that some local tradesmen had found the mine and unwittingly decided to load it onto a horse drawn cart with disasterous results . The tradesmen tried to manhandle the mine on to the cart watched by a group of school children on their lunchbreak when the mine slipped of the cart detonated killing the men , horse and a number of children one of which was known to my grandmother.
In recent times I have tried to find reference to this incident but without much success maybe the 大象传媒 can uncover the story from archives.

Message 1 - Local archives best?

Posted on: 11 November 2003 by L Jackson

Hello Laughing Welshie

Your best bet would probably be Scottish local archives or local libraries. There might also be local history societies which could help. You could also try writing to the local newspaper or radio stations.

I doubt that the 大象传媒 archives would have anything on this and we volunteer researchers have no access to them anyway. The National Newspaper Museum at Colindale in North London might have newspapers of the time, but censorship might render them useless.

If you have any further questions, click on "L Jackson - WW2 Researcher" and then on the "Leave a message" button in my personal area. Remember that this may not be the last word on this topic, so you may want to check again later and please come back and let us know how you got on.

HTH, L Jackson.
