The successful D-Day landings and the push across France and the low countries had brought hopes of a speedy end to the war in Europe, but was it to be so?
Hitler had been long ranting, that his "Wonder Weapons" would snatch victory from the Jaws of Defeat.
Already we had experienced the V 1 pilot less planes packed with explosives, a limited result was being obtained against them. Then there was the V 2 supersonic rocket against which there was no defence. What other weapons of mass destruction were being worked on by the Nazi War Machine?
Atomic Bomb? Chemical Warfare? Armaments of various kinds? U Boats with greater speed and range? Yes,
it was horrifying to realize that Nazi Germany could still win, or passing over these secrets to their Japanese Allies help them to prolong the war.
What was needed was a force that could seize targets of a scientific and experimental nature,
along with their personnel. Protect them against sabotage, destruction and looting(there were a few
million slave workers milling around germany), evaluate and evacuate the items and personnel to the UK.
1st line troops were busy with the enemy forces and securing points of strategic importance.
A special force needed to be created to move with the 1st line troops and secure "targets", although with the fluidity of of battle, there were time when T Forces took targets ahead of 1st line troops.
We were part of that target force, which eventually numbered some 7000 personnel.
Much of the knowledge gained at that time helped us in not loosing the "Cold War".
