On the 30th. August 1939 I had my 12th birthday and 3 days later war was declared.I was visiting my cousins just around the corner from my house. As everybody knows just after the declaration the air raid sirens sounded. My aunt decided that I should go home to my parents, so Arthur Brown (a school teacher who lodged with them) was asked to take me home. This was unusual as I was perfectly able to get home by myself it was only a few hundred yards, but everybody seemed to be unsure of what they should do or what would happen.
I got home and my Mum was flapping around but glad to see me. Not long after I arrived the all clear sounded and Mr.Chandler our air raid warden rode up the road on his bicycle sounding the gas warning rattle - he had got it all wrong, but nobody took any notice.
After all this excitement things quietened down to an (almost) normal sunday morning.
