My late father was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation and was operating a rear-guard action and therefore did not reach the beaches, which could have been his saviour. He was with a small group from his regiment in the town of Dunkirk and the German forces were rapidly advancing. They were using various buildings in the town as protection making their way to the beaches to no avail as, due to the attacking German Division they reached a point where the group were surrounded by the enemy and to carry on defending would have been suicidal. His Captain arrived at the point where he knew they could do no more and gave the order to throw away the firing pins and surrender. My father was then kicked into line with the rest of his colleagues who were taken to a POW camp in Poland. He was kept there for 5 years during which time he attempted to escape 5 times but was caught each time but thankfully survived any beatings etc., he had to endure. FInally the Germans capitulated and many were able to escape. He endured the LONG MARCH. His nickname was 'Buck'.
