This is me resting up at Naples after Termoli
As we were moving up the leg of Italy, an officer told us to go ahead of the column in our wireless truck, and,if we were shot at, to return right away and report...(that is if we got back in one piece!). There were 3 men in the truck, the driver, the wireless operator and one stood up next to the driver riding shot gun (his actual role was as a spotter against enemy aircraft).
When we arrived in Termoli it was still light, and we received orders to dig in, as we had been cut off by the Germans. We all started digging this dug out, when roaring out of the sky , two German planes came screaming down, machine gunning us. The fact was , that they came down parallel with the ground and the bullets were screaming over our heads. If they would have flown at 45 degrees we would have all been dead.
When this was over, Ted said to me ‘What were you thinking about whilst this was happening?’. I replied "What's my mother going to say when she hears that I’ve been killed" and then I asked Ted ‘What were you thinking about? ‘ and he replied ‘that you were going to be killed first as you were nearest!’
