I can still remember the sirens sounding. Next door's son worked at Shelton Bar steel works. He put his mother in the shelter in the garden and went off to work. He told her to stay there until the all clear sounded. He came home from work at about 11pm and ran through the house shouting for his mother. No reply. She was still in the shelter waiting for the All Clear which had sounded hours and hours before!
There were 4 wardens at the end of our street, Bright Street in Northwood. the incendiary bomb were being dropped on Hanley Deep Pit. One of the wardens only had one leg but he ran down the raod faster than all the other three - the others just dropped to the floor.
I do remember that on a Saturday night, Hanley Meat Market would sell off all their meat really cheaply. The whole family would go down and queue. We'd come out with a big bag full of meat for two bob!
