Walking along the road to our house, after getting fish and chips for tea, I saw a plane above me hovering overhead, thinking it was one of our planes. It began all of a sudden to dive as if it was going to hit me. I dropped the fish and chips and ran to our house. There were loud bangs of bombs dropping which landed up by Blackpole Estate, where the munitions factory and railway lines were. So we had no fish and chips for tea that night.
My Grandfather was Air Raid Warden, and he had to look after our street. He used to patrol up and down. He had buckets of water and sand ready in case any incendary bombs were dropped. He also had an old stirrup pump. The night Coventry and Birmingham was bombed, I was out with my Grandfather. We could hear all the planes going over, and see the show of the flames in the distance.
