In 1944 I was 13 yrs old. One day I was in my school play ground with my friends. Above us, in the sky, were three American Thunderbolt fighter planes. They were practicing maneuvers, dog fighting and chasing each other. Suddenly they all collided! We were excited to see the planes but to see them collide was terrible.
One crash landed at Lawley Bank, one at Lawley and the other tried to make it back to his base at Atcham, but I am not sure he made it.
Afterwards I saw the two planes on the ground. The one that crashed at Lawley Bank apparently was on fire and its guns were going off shooting at the houses. I think at least two pilots were killed.
