I was 8 years old, when the war started in September 1939. The other members of our extended family joined us in our three-bedroomed council house. So there were thirteen of us. We all pulled together, though during this time of crisis.
The German planes flew over to Filton on the 25th September 1940. Some of the family were walking from Sea Mills to Filton. When the raid started they sheltered in a tin hut on Horfield Common. Filton was being badly bombed. Eventually they arrived at my Grandmothers house. She saw that her eiderdown that she had hanging over the washing line was missing. "Who's stolen my eiderdown" she said....
She did not realise that her roof had been blown off through the bombing. So Grandmother moved in with us, along with two budgerigars and an Airedale dog.
One day lots of kit Bags were left at my Aunts doorstep in Shirehampton and the Yanks (Americans) arrived just a bit later. They brought goodies such as Cookies, Chocolate and Candy (Sweets).
