As an 11 year old Girl Guide I was camping at the small village of Hayton, near Carlisle when VJ day was anounced. That evening celebrations were held in the Village Hall to which we were all invited. We probably didn't understand much about the significance of VJ day but I have never forgotten the event.
Other events I clearly remember were as a 6 or 7 year old having a bomb drop in a field very close to my cottage home in the village of Carleton, near Carlisle. It made a very deep crater in the field and I remember the activity of the Air Raid Wardens during the night. The German planes had a distinct droning sound and I think they may have been trying to bomb the main railway line which was close by.
My father, James Lamb, served in the Army during the war and when he came home on leave he always brought chocholate for us. I distinctly remember the Ration Chocholate. I remember not being able to but oranges in our market in Carlisle because I had just gone from a green ration book to a blue one. I cried for an orange and the stallholder gave me a damaged one - I thought I'd been given gold
