I was born in Aldershot in 1931, and grew up in Camberley. My father was working at the Sanders Academy, teaching bagpipes to the students. After transferring to the Royal Artillery, he was eventually invalided out though still retaining very strong ties to the army. Because of his military background, my father had taught me how to be independent in life, to always have a fighting spirit, and to be able to stand on my own feet. My perspective of the war remains to this day that it was a sheer waste of life, time, and all faults are down to money.
