I was sent to India in 1945 with the First Wilts Regiment (later changed to First Warwick's).
My first experience was being burnt while on parade. You had to stand in the sun just in shorts and do your drills and exercises and I got so badly burnt it looked as if I had been scalded. I ended up in hospital!
Another vivid memory was of the peanut vendors: they sold peanuts in paper cones and I really enjoyed them! We knew they were safe to eat because they were still in their shells. But fruit had to be dipped in some sort of liquid to disinfect them!
Another foodstuff I remember was rice. It was grown in paddies. They built wells with a sloped passage at one end and a bullock with a rope round its head would pull buckets out of the well. The buckets were tipped onto the paddy fields and the bullock would return down the slope again for another bucket. What struck me as odd was that there was an electric railway in the background!
I would just like to say what a lovely country India is.
