I'm a pupil from Prudhoe Community High School Northumberland, entering Peter Johnstone's story onto the website, and they fully understand the site's terms and conditions of use.
I was 17 when the war broke out. My cousin and me were out walking past the golf course when we heard the air raid siren's go off. Coventry was at risk off being bombed and was eventually flattened. If you overheard a conversation it would most of the time be about the war coming towards us. I wasn鈥檛 evacuated as I was in Manchester at the time at University. I had volunteered to be in the R.A.F. The first plane that I flew was a Tiger Moth at Manchester Airport (Ring way). I was signed for R.A.F. training straight away. My commander was a nice fellow unfortunately replaced by someone who was very unpleasant. I thought if I flew a plane then my life would be taking quickly from me. I was allowed to write home but we were limited to what we could say. If there was something that wasn鈥檛 to be read it got blacked out. The sort of things that weren鈥檛 to be read were the location of some people and were they were going. I joined the R.A.F when I was 19. I flew to a lot of different places but luckily I was home for Christmas with my two children and my wife.
