I was called up for KN 1941, at Rosyth Scotland, after three months training, I was posted to Portsmouth RN Base, I volunteered for submarine service at HMS Dolphin 1943. I failed my medical at Dolphin and was returned to HMS Victory Portsmouth. I was drafted to HMS Marne for Russian Convoy duty. 1946, I was demobbed. I am still with St Helens branch Ex Naval Association and we visit other Ex Naval depots throughout the UK. We returned to Murmansk this year after 61 years. The Russian population treated us like long lost brothers and the people were generous in making our 10 days visit unforgettable. The British and Russian embassy made us feel like heroes of World War 2. We still keep in touch with the survivors of Rusian (Navy News), opposite James St rail station every month, and we meet at St Helens each month for memories of our comrades who did not reach harbour after the war. The veterans who are left are down to twelve people all over 10 years. Ex Naval and Merchant Navy survivors are welcome to join us in St Helens every 1st Wednesday of each month for a happy reunion of the survivors of Russian convoys.
