"One item stands out in my memory during out time in Tobrul. Our Section Officer who was billeted in the next villa to us. He sent for me one night and was obviously very distressed because he had just received news that his brother had been killed in Singapore. He wanted desperately to write a letter of condolence and comfort to his mother, but in his present state of mind he was unable to put pen to paper. All our letters home were censored by the section officers and he said that he had noted I always wrote very good letters and would I write one to his mother on his behalf. I duly complied and I've often wondered, in later years, whether it gave her any comfort.鈥

This story was submitted to the people鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from CSV Oxford on behalf of the late Bill Harvey. It is a transcript of his own diary and several interviews. He gave written permission for the material to be edited and published.
