I was in Junior school when they decided to evacuate us. The results of our entry exams to High School were rushed through and I went with Harwich County High School to Dursley in Gloucestershire. It was a big wrench leaving my parents and brother. We were taken by train and arrived at Lister's Engineering Factory. Gradually people were taken by families but two of us were left and eventually taken by a family who were not very kind to me. My parents came after one year and found another family for me. They were more like my own and I was happy. Our school gradually diminished as children returned home.
I returned home in 1943 - and remember a German fighter over the houses. Also the VIs and V2s.
I took some of my exams in the air raid shelter.
