Because of evacuation in 1939 there were very few teachers left, so we’d go to school one week in the mornings and the next week in the afternoons, providing the shell warning / sirens hadn’t gone — but we spent most the time with friends mainly in the air raid shelters — I was taken out of school at 13 to work in the house as mother was away on duty most of the time with the Navy.
