This story has been added to The People’s War Website by CSV Volunteer Olivia Davey on behalf of the author David Ward who understands the site’s terms and conditions.

Born 1941 in Clifden Bristol.

I remember the rationing books and how we had to be really tight on the food. Only a quarter lb of butter once in a blue moon, meat was very hard to get. We had smoked bacon bones which made lovely stew with vegetables. You can’t get them now!

It’s taught us how to cope in hard times. You didn’t waste anything then. If it was left over you had it another time ‘recycled’!
