After being accepted by the Military Police Selection Board in Salisbury, I was sent to Aldershot for a 'toughening up' course. After one week's leave I was posted to Colchester.
Colchester was then a garrison town with British and American troops living there.
We were kept very busy. There were fights every night between the British and the Americans. I thought this was because the Americans had too much money and the British had not enough money. There was jealousy and rivalry between them.
We had to patrol the streets in two's checking uniforms of the British girls in all the forces. We did not have jurisdiction over the Americam troops though. The civilian police helped us. They told us which houses to go to for hot drinks when we were on patrol.
On one occasion we were looking for a girl who had gone absent without leave - AWOL. The civilian police had phoned to say that they thought an HMS girl was seen going into a local taxi office. This taxi office was a suspected brothel. There were also reports of personnel queueing on the taxi office stairs at night. After watching the office from across the road for a while, we went up the stairs. An American who was with us kicked the door down. There we found an American soldier shouting from under the bed, 'Pass me my pants!' Our girl was there, stark naked! She was told to get dressed. We took her down to the local barracks where she was given a dishonourable dismissal.
