While we were on the road to Falaiz, a despatch rider came to give us a message. We had been told to keep off the verge as the Germans had planted mines all along there and it had not been swept. There were big signs saying 'Verge Not Swept'.
The rider pulled up and parked his bike on the verge and put it on its stand. He delivered his message and we had a little chat. He then went over to his bike. As he pulled the bike back off the stand there was an almighty explosion and just a crater was left where he had just been stood.
