This story has been added to the People's War website by a volunteer from CSV on behalf of Fred Thirlaway. Mr Thirlaway fully understands the site's terms and conditions, and the story has been added to the site with his permission.
My uncle Earnie served in the D.L.I. He was in charge of German P.O.W.'s who were carrying out some road repairs in the Blaydon area. En route to the site in the army wagon, he used to call at our house for a cup of tea. My gran and mam used to serve them all with a cuppa and any biscuits which I had not found. Having watched the newsreels at the local cinemas, I knew all about the Germans.
So I used to march around with the German Jack step, with my right hand raised, open palmed and with my left index finger under my nose, like a moustache, shouting: "Heil Hitler! - Heil Hitler!" It worked every time. The Germans used to say "He very good"
and give me a bar of chocolate. Not a bad exchange for a few dry biscuits!
