The most exciting thing to happen to our little southern town was when diplomats from Japan, Germany and Italy came to stay in The Grove Park Inn because the government didn’t want to let them go back to their countries because they were worried they were spies. The diplomats were guarded by army officials for most if the war. Most of the the residents never saw the prisoners but I was allowed to because I would help out in the Inn. That was my only contact with the ‘enemy’.
