We have seen too many ruins,
So many, you and me,
And we have stood in ruins,
And called them victory.
For we came out from ruins,
From towns we loved aflame,
And meted out destruction,
On those we held to blame.
And we saw much dying,
Our own and those we fought,
But saw in each dead human,
A kinship not yet taught.
So you and I learned lessons,
That every ruined hearth,
Warmed those we might have drunk with,
Had tyrants held their wrath.
And the world will see more ruins,
Still hear the cannon's laugh,
'til each new generation,
Kneels at it's cenotaph.
