this is a story about my Grandfather.
During the War he used to guard Buckingham Palace during the early years, and would boast that he got to pee on the roof of the palace years latter. when the Italian Campaign began, he was sent out there to the battle feilds. my Grandfather, Peter Cousins got a lot of hope and courage from the letters of poetry my Grandmother sent him, espisally when he fought in the battle of Monti Casino.
however, what he didn't realise was that she didn't write them. as most young women did during the War (married or otherwise) My Grandmother would go to servicemen dances, in which she enjoyed enticing a young Canadian serviceman. this young Canadian, being totally enamored, wrote the most beautiful love poetry to Irene my grandmother. these would come in almost everyday. my Grandmother would read them, and then quickly re-write them and send them off to my Grandfather on the front. She laughed at this story for many years afterwards while she was still alive. We still have most of the poetry, and they are very beautiful and my Grandfather survived the War. i always wonder if the Canadian Serviceman ever had a clue that he helped keep alive my Grandfather...
