I remember this day well - it was the 6th June, 1944. I woke early in the morning and heard endless aircraft noise ahead, coming out of my billet. I saw countless troops and equipment passing by on the road, through the camp to the embarkation port. Once this started it went on for days and days. Troops of all nationalities. Then of course, we heard on the radio that the invasion had begun. It was exciting being there in the middle of all the action. So exciting infact that you couldn't even cross the road because there was so much military activitity.
There was a lot of commotion, sense of trepidation - it struck me that the invasion really had begun. ( I was a also a little worried because I was due to go on leave for my wedding in Lincoln on the 29th July 1944. Thankfully, I was able to get away and the wedding and honeymoon went ahead!)
