I was a boy of 14 living in London and during the blitz by the Luffwaffe, I read a small item in the Newspaper that recorded a story about a man who openned his bedroom door and fell 30 feet because the bombing had destroyed the stairway. I made a mental note.
Well, I was a young lad who refused to go to an airaid shelter with my Mum on account of the discomfort of sleeping on a form of wood etc; so I slept in my bed at the top of our 3 storey house. When a near miss bomb fell with an ear splitting bang and blew the front of the building out, I completely forgot me pre selected drill and scooted out of the bedroom wearing only my shirt and down the glass covered stairs to be confronted by my Mum who said.... 'We were lucky'
