Aunt Mary now in her late eighties got herself into a bit of trouble with the law during the blackout.
During daylight hours on a bright cloudy day with light alternating between dull and bright, a house light was switched on and forgotten about. Only when she was awoken by a policeman during the night did she realise what she had done.
She was informed she would be fined 3s(15p)and there would be no need to attend court the officer told her, but for her just to forward the money.
A few days later the policeman returned to tell her that she should after all go to the court as there would now be two charges; one of showing a light during the blackout, the other was for wasting electricity.
My mother accompanied her younger sister to the court, both of them losing a days pay. In the end only one charge was brought against Aunt Mary and that was of wasting electricity.
