North Staffordshire played three main roles in The War. Firstly: All the Clearing Banks arrived in the night by train, policemen knocking on doors asking who could take them and their families in.
Although we were a family of five, we took in four, persuading a lady across the road to take the other member of the family.The Banks were housed in Trentham Gardens Ballroom,in the balconies and in sections on the dance floor.The second roll was: Trentham Park, adjacent to to The Gardens.Was were troups from Dunkirk were billeted including French seamen. DeGaul visited them there. It was used for officer training also.
Thirdly: Bombs and shells were also manufacured
in the area.
