My Great Grandma's name back then was Elizabeth Watinson and she was only seventeen when the war started. just before the war Elizabeth lived with a family in Southport where she was a nanny to there small boy and helped set tables and clean the silver in their guest house. As the war went on she moved back home with her mum down in St Helens in Dudley Street.
All of my Great Grandma's brothers went to war,her brother Joe was in the army her brother Jim was in the RAF and youngest brother Tom who lied about his age went in the Navy at sixteen. My Great Grandma learnt the differences between German and British planes by the noise they made. She had many air raid shelters in the children's play ground. She worked for O.C Hawkes making bits for aeroplanes, then she worked for U.G.B Glass Works where she met her husband Arthur Locke. My great Grandma used to have rations for evey thing, she used to queue every day to collect them. The only meat they were allowed was horse meat. Elizabeth lived quite near a street that got bombed where two family's died it was very frightening for her and very sad.
