I lived in Monmouthshire and our evacuees came from Kent. The boy we had was called Derek Broome, aged 12, and he came from Chatham. The evacuees coming to our little village was a revelation because, not only were they tougher than us, but also the accent was totally foreign. We lived in a coal mining valley and rarely heard another accent than our Welsh one. They were much more street-wise than us but they soon settled in and became part of our life

One day Derek asked my mother for a piece of cake in his Kent accent which sounded to me quite terrible. I had my come-uppance years later when I came to live in Kent because my own daughter one day said to me 鈥渃an I have a piece of cake, Mum鈥 in a Kent accent. I said to her 鈥測ou鈥檒l never have another piece of cake from me, unless you say cake as I do!鈥
